The Waggle Platform is being employed to help perform real-world field tests on a series of next-generation solar-powered smart windows – windows in buildings that generate electricity from sunlight. The Figure above illustrates a deployment on a window. This electricity will be fed into a local electricity grid to create sustainable buildings for future cities. The figure below shows a miniature transparent solar cell connected to a prototype of the waggle framework; this features temperature, humidity and light sensors to record environmental conditions while it simultaneously monitors the current and voltage produced by the solar cell. All data are uploaded to the cloud every 30 seconds for open-source viewing and analysis. This is a new project funded by the 1851 Royal Commission, UK, and is in collaboration with Argonne National Laboratory, the British Consulate of Chicago, and the University of Cambridge, UK.
